COMFORT AND HOPE FOR THE SUFFERING

What is Drug/Substance Addiction?

According to the American Psychiatric Association, “Addiction is a complex condition, a brain disease that is manifested by compulsive substance use despite harmful consequences. People with addiction (severe substance use disorder) have an intense focus on using a certain substance(s), such as alcohol or drugs, to the point that it takes over their life. They keep using alcohol or a drug even when they know it will cause problems. Yet a number of effective treatments are available and people can recover from addiction and lead normal, productive lives.

Why do people experience Drug/Substance Addiction?

Addiction is due to misplaced desires. People believe they may find fulfillment or relief from taking a substance, even though time and time again the substance does not provide the intended fulfillment or lasting relief they desire. There may be short term feelings of euphoria, happiness, or relief, but whenever the high or intoxication wears off, people often feel worse than before.

Is there hope for change?

There is great hope for change. This page is dedicated to sharing the stories of warriors who have overcome addiction through the power of Christ.  Psalm 107:13-15 says “Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness, utter darkness, and broke away their chains.” Thousands of people just like you have overcome addictions through the power of Christ, community, and treatment.
