Cathedrals of England Cycle Ride
63-year-old Nigel is Cycling to Save Lives!
Nigel is on an extraordinary adventure to help change the lives of over 5,000 people.
Nigel has a metal hip and he’s never done anything like this before, but he’s determined to complete his challenge to cycle to 42 English cathedrals and raise £15,000 to provide clean water for the poorest of the poor . Covering over 2,000km (1,243 miles), this is going to be exhausting and so why is he doing it?
“I came up with this idea because it combines my love and interest in England’s cathedrals, while I’m also deeply moved to help thousands of people, who don’t have access to clean drinking water,” said Nigel.
In India, one person dies every five hours from drinking contaminated water and, if Nigel completes his challenge, he will provide bore wells and clean drinking water for 13 villages and over 5,000 people!
“We are so blessed in the developed countries and I do think we can do more to help the children and the adults who face the risk of fatal water borne diseases every day of their lives,” said Nigel.
In doing a podcast on every cathedral, Nigel hopes he will stir an interest in the architectural masterpieces that are close to millions of people in the UK. “I’m inspired by the wonderful heritage we have in this country,” said Nigel, “and, in seeing the cathedrals and learning some of the fascinating facts about each one, I hope others will be inspired to pay them a visit.”
Asked what his concerns are for the challenge, he said, “My big concern is that my body holds together for the duration and that I arrive back safely to my family. I’m not a big drinker but I would like to sample the local real ale in each city to help keep my body moving”.
While many of us are deeply concerned for those less fortunate than us, Nigel is a great inspiration to us all because he’s doing something about it!
